Internships

Our internship programs are directed at WWU and WCC students, and other qualified community members who seek professional experience in fields related to live music and visual art.

These intensive positions require reliable, committed candidates. All internships are unpaid; WWU students may intern for credit, pending approval from their department chair.

Photography Intern

The ideal candidate for the Make.Shift Art Space photo intern position is motivated, reliable, and experienced individual.

Job description:

Our photography intern will shoot, edit, and post content on various web platforms for Make.Shift Art Space. The photo intern will work under the director to produce quality, timely work.

Applicants should have excellent communication and time-management skills. Must have a working phone and email account, and must respond to phone calls and emails within the business day. Candidates must have access to a digital camera, flash and editing software. Experience shooting live music is preferred but not required. Candidates must have access to a computer from which to edit and post work (personal laptop preferable). If renting equipment from WWU or elsewhere, intern must be capable of reserving equipment in advance of assignments.

Candidates must be available to work at least two days a week, and those who are available to attend all Make.Shift music/art events are strongly preferred. Make.Shift hosts up to five live music shows a month, usually on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 8 p.m.-midnight. We also host opening gallery receptions on Art Walk, on the first Friday of every month. Intern will be required to edit and post their work by 1 p.m. the day after each event.

No professional experience is required, but previous photography experience is a must. This position requires a substantial time commitment, and we expect applicants to manage their time effectively.

Make.Shift is open Tuesday – Saturday, noon – 5 p.m. and during live shows.

Gallery Intern

The ideal candidate for the Make.Shift Art Space gallery intern is motivated, reliable and detail-oriented individual.

Job description:

Intern will be responsible for duties including but not limited to: assisting the Gallery Director with administrative tasks, gallery hanging, art intake for gallery exhibitions, art redistribution after exhibitions, poster printing and distribution, and other gallery-related errands in and outside the gallery. Applicants should have excellent communication and time-management skills.

Applicants must have a working phone and email account, and must respond to phone calls and emails within the business day. A driver’s license and vehicle are recommended but not required.No experience is necessary but an interest in contemporary art, and a basic knowledge of Bellingham (and WWU) artists would be beneficial.

Must be available to work one to two days a week. Must have time available during the first Wednesday-Friday of each month, for Downtown Art Walk.

Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday, noon – 5 p.m.

Graphic Design Intern

The ideal candidate for Make.Shift Art Space graphic design intern is a motivated, reliable individual who has basic graphic design skills.

Job description:

Intern will develop and produce materials related to Make.Shift’s graphic needs, including: exhibition posters and post cards, gallery signage, and promotional materials. Intern may also be asked to print and assist in the distribution of promotional posters. Interns will work under the direction of the Gallery Coordinator to produce at least one exhibition poster per month, for the duration of the internship.

Applicants should have excellent communication and time-management skills. Must have a working phone and email account, and must respond to phone calls and emails within the business day. Candidates should have experience with Adobe Creative Suite, and access to a computer from which to produce work (personal laptop preferable).

Must be available to work one to two days a week. Must have time available during the first Thursday and Friday of each month, for Downtown Art Walk.

Multimedia: Web Intern

The ideal candidate for the Make.Shift Art Space web intern is a motivated, reliable, and detail-oriented individual.

Job description:

Our Web Intern will gain valuable experience in the development and maintenance of the Make.Shift website. Intern will contribute to the design and development of digital media initiatives, and will work with the photo and video interns to make their content available on the website. Intern will also be responsible for the upkeep of the site, regularly uploading content including event, calendar and newsfeed information.

Applicants should have excellent communication and time-management skills. Must have a working phone and email account, and must respond to phone calls and emails within the business day. Candidates must have experience with WordPress and other online blogging and content-management systems. Candidates with Photoshop, HTML, JavaScript and CSS experience strongly preferred. Candidates must have access to a computer from which to produce work (personal laptop preferable).

We encourage design students and computer sciences students to apply. Candidates must be available to work at least two days a week (intern will often have the option of working from home, but may also be required to work at Make.Shift).

Video Intern

The ideal candidate for the Make.Shift Art Space video intern is a motivated, reliable, and experienced individual.

Job description:

Our Video Intern will shoot and edit footage to create promotional video for  Make.Shift Art Space. The Video Intern will work with the Director to produce quality, timely work, and with the Web Intern to make content available on the website. Intern create at least two complete videos (approx. 5 min or less) during the quarter.

Applicants should have excellent communication and time-management skills. Must have a working phone and email account, and must respond to phone calls and emails within the business day. Candidates must have experience shooting video with HD cameras, and must be proficient with video editing software. Candidates with Final Cut Pro experience strongly preferred. Candidates must have access to a computer from which to produce work (personal laptop preferable). Candidates must have access to a digital HD camera with video capability. If renting equipment from WWU, intern must be capable of reserving equipment in advance of assignments.

Candidates must be available to work at least two days a week (intern will often have the option of working from home, but may also be required to work at Make.Shift).

Public Relations Intern

The ideal candidate for the Make.Shift Art Space public relations intern is a motivated, reliable individual who knows the basics of public relations and marketing, as well as seeks experience and learning in a hands-on environment.

Job description:

Intern will develop and produce marketing materials related to Make.Shift’s events and organization needs including: press releases, event postings, website updates, social media posts on all platforms and any additional promotional materials. Intern may also be asked to write and assist in the distribution of promotional materials. Interns will work under the direction of the Executive Director to produce at least one press release per month, for the duration of the internship.

Applicants should have excellent communication and time-management skills. Must have a working phone and email account, and must respond to phone calls and emails within the business day. Ideally candidates would have experience with Adobe Creative Suite, but access to a computer is a must from which to produce work (personal laptop preferable).

Must be available to work one to two days a week. Must have time available during the one office hours shift at the gallery (Tuesday-Saturday 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.) as well as being present for events.
