Mt. Baker Planned Parenthood and Make.Shift are proud to present photographer Molly Landreth’s Embodiment exhibit from May 13 through May 27. Landreth will give an artist talk on May 18 at 6pm downstairs at Make.Shift. Says Landreth:

Embodiment: A Portrait of Queer Life in is an archive and a journey through a rapidly changing community and the lives of people who offer brave new visions of what it means to be queer in America today. Stopping in churches, parks, high school classrooms, back yards and bedrooms, I have collaborated with individuals from both urban and rural areas for over 6 years. With this ever-growing archive of portraits, I aim to highlight a national experience while acknowledging its many diverging, overlapping and at times conflicting parts. Created as a joint effort with participants who boldly stand in front of my lens, Embodiment reveals images of love and survival, creative forms of gender expression and the ever-changing anatomy of a family. It is my hope that these photographs will become a lasting archive for generations to come.

If you like music you cannot miss this event. If you like helping people that like music you cannot miss this event.

about the bands:

Hell & Lula
‘We wanna make you dance, we wanna make you think. We want to make you think about dancing.” – Hell &

Lula
We’re three dudes, a chick, and a robot slave from L.A. playing music we enjoy and playing like we mean it.

We tour in a “Cool Bus” (a converted school bus), we’ve developed the first Recycled Merchandise Program we’ve ever heard of, and we help spread the message of our friends at Falling Whistles about the war in Congo, what can be done to stop it and how funds raised through the sale of whistles help rehabilitate war-affected kids.

hellandlula.com/

Sonar Lights
Sonar Lights hails from Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas and embraces a style of heavy alternative rock. The band’s sound is comprised of full guitar tones, rhythmic textures and a mix of eastern melodic vocals.
Self-produced and recorded in the band’s rehearsal space, their debut EP (2010) combined with their dynamic live shows, has earned the band critical praise from fans, local press, radio stations and fellow musicians alike.

Sonar Lights has had the privilege of opening for established Grammy award winning acts as Cowboy Mouth, Candle Box, Vince Neil and the B-52′s.

wix.com/aresoltero/sonar1

Sunshine
Electronic Rock Pop Duo of Jesse Denison, James Melloh will make your heart bleed… from the inside. Much like Icarus if you venture to close to them you well melt… from the outside.

Christmas trees need lights, and lights need power. Where does the power come from? This Winter, THE POWER COMES FROM YOU!

Make.Shift invites you to participate in our first full day of human powered holiday joy. By hopping on one of our Power Wheel bike generators this December 10 and 11, you’ll be among the few people in the world to light up a Christmas tree with nothing but sweat and festive cheer!

Beginning at 10 am at the Farmer’s Market in Depot Market Square, we’ll be cranking the generators for a full 24 hours until 10 am Sunday, December 11.

Riders will be going on an hour-long stationary riding tour of the square, with live entertainment, tasty refreshments, and of course – the fruit of their labors – A MAGNIFICENT HUMAN POWERED CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTING THEIR JOURNEY THROUGH THE NIGHT.

Riders pay a $10 entrance fee, and are encouraged to solicit sponsorship from employers, friends and relatives. Prizes will be awarded to the rider who brings in the most dough! Through these donations, our community will be doing its part to help support local, independent artists and musicians and the incredible things they do.

We only have two bikes, which means spots are limited! Go to the link below to sign up today:

http://signupgenius.com/go/cyclotron

Make.Shift Finally Finds a Home!

WHAT: Jinx Grand Reopening & October Art Walk
WHEN: 6 p.m.-12 a.m. Friday Oct. 7
WHERE: Jinx, 306 Flora Street

Make.Shift is happy to announce the grand reopening of Jinx Art Space on Friday October 7. The local nonprofit, which bought the business and took over the building’s lease in July, has worked tirelessly to update and rework the space’s basement. Make.Shift has kept artists in place who are already renting studio space, while devoting more room to affordable music studios where bands can practice without fear of noise complaints.

“We’re excited to provide more infrastructure for artists and musicians, while retaining the character of the old Jinx,” said Cat Sieh, Make.Shift Director.

Sieh said the space will function much as it did before, with some additions and changes. The upstairs space will remain a gallery, and Jinx will still participate in regular Art Walks. Live music will still be held downstairs, and Make.Shift will also make the downstairs space available during weekdays for special events rentals such as fundraisers and event receptions.

The grand reopening will include Art Walk gallery reception “The Black Forest: Fear and Nature,” a group show featuring more than a dozen local artists including Aaron Brick and Kelly Hoekema.

Downstairs artists will open their studios to the public as usual, offering everything from paintings to handmade Halloween costumes! The Bellingham Circus Guild will be there with their usual fiery antics, in addition to a vaudeville act, and live music by Bar Tabac.

Come say hello and see the new Jinx. We’ve missed you!

What: “Pedal Power: a Bicycle Generator Workshop”
When: 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, January 30
Where: American Museum of Radio & Electricity, 1312 Bay Street
Price: $10
All ages welcome

Make.Shift will present “Pedal Power: a human-driven bicycle generator workshop” at Bellingham’s Museum of Radio and Electricity from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 30. Licensed electricians from Mac&Mac Electric will instruct participants on how to build a bike-powered generator that can power anything from basic household appliances to a live concert.

Mac&Mac electricians will be building a bike generator similar to Make.Shift’s current “Power Wheel.” Make.Shift uses the Power Wheel to power live shows indoors and outdoors in Bellingham, educating the music community about its environmental impact. Workshop participants will also receive written building instructions to take home.

No materials are required. This workshop is safe for all ages. Please contact Make.Shift at info@makeshiftproject.com or 510.499.0535 to reserve a spot.

All proceeds will benefit Make.Shift, a Bellingham-based 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to helping struggling musicians while lessening their impact on the environment. The American Museum of Radio and Electricity offers a variety of dynamic science education classes, workshops and events through their SPARK (Science Powered Adventures for Real Kids) program. AMRE is also a 501c3 nonprofit organization and can be reached at www.amre.us or 360.738.3886.

The Power Wheel is currently on display in the front window of AMRE. Take a look! Please contact make.shift for Power Wheel photo opportunities.
